Rent in Poole to increase by more than 8% after minister turns down petitions to lower rent

Individuals renting in Poole will soon have to dig deeper in their purses to pay their rent. Despite their pleas to the government, the increase in Poole rent will go into effect soon.

Cllr. Neil Sorton, cabinet porfolio holder for housing, Borough of Poole, explains: "I wrote to the minister with the request to review the increase in Poole rent. We have to consider that 65% of tenants receive benefits. By raising the rent in Poole the government may very well be raising their benefit costs since more and more people will apply for housing benefits."

The reply he got from Andrew Stunnell, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government was not positive. Mr. Stunnell explained that the increase in Poole rent will proceed as planned because they need to be in accordance with the housing association sector. Mr. Stunnell did state that they are aware of the predicament those with lower incomes may find themselves in with this increase of the rent in Poole and he claimed that they are committed to keep local authority social rents well below market rates.

Poole Housing Partnerships tenants will have to deal with an increase of 6.34% which translated in numbers means that they will be paying an average of £4.68 on a weekly basis. In a year with 48 weeks this will come out to a total of £78.48. Non-resident garage renters in Poole will face a 6.4% raise in their rent. If you rent in the old town you will now pay £12.75 instead of £12. If you rent in the rest of the borough you will now have to shell out £8 instead of £7.50. As you can see, these increases in Poole rent affect everyone.
